One Year with the Vire Clip

A Finnish special forces veteran spent eight years gathering intelligence without being noticed, then spent the next fifteen doing the same thing to his own body — blood tests, glucose monitors, treadmill masks — until a clip on his waistband finally closed the one gap he could never cover, which was the night. He wears it because a man trained to distrust a single source now has his own conclusions corroborated by something other than himself.
Mikko Rautio went to a health summit in Tallinn determined not to buy anything. He had already spent fifteen hundred euros on lab tests that week, he knows he has a weakness for new gadgets, and he had decided in advance to walk past the technology stands without stopping.
He walked past the Vire stand twice. Then, at an introduction round the next day, he heard one of the founders describe what the clip was for, sought him out that evening, and pre-ordered days later.
What changed his mind was not a feature. Asked what pulled him in, he did not mention temperature, or sleep, or any of the things we usually lead with.
That is a peculiar way to describe a wearable, and it is a completely ordinary way to describe his old job. For eight years Mikko was an operator in Finland's professional special forces, and his speciality was reconnaissance.
What reconnaissance actually is
He was precise about the terminology when asked.
Gather quietly, from a position where you are not noticed, and report back. That is the whole trade, and once you have heard him define it, it is difficult to hear anything else he says without noticing the same shape underneath.

He left the forces in 2013 and brought two things out with him. A habit of gathering information about a situation before deciding anything, and a body that had spent a decade carrying heavy loads. A disc herniation, almost certainly from the loads, has left scar bone on one side of a nerve bundle and a bulging disc on the other. He no longer runs for more than an hour.
Prevention is reconnaissance too. It is finding out early enough that you still have options.
Fifteen years of patrolling himself
The civilian version started in 2010 at a free lecture by a Finnish nutrition speaker. He is wary of biohacking as a label and prefers health optimisation, and he points out that he was ordering his own blood tests before he had heard either term. Nobody told him to gather that data. He went and got it.
Then triathlon, semi-professionally, from 2014 to 2019. Around ten continuous glucose monitors, which turned up a real carbohydrate sensitivity. Treadmill tests in a mask to find out how much of his fuel was coming from fat. Every one of those is the same manoeuvre: go out, obtain a reading nobody is offering you, come back, decide something.

Each patrol brought back one layer, for part of a day. The training was heavily instrumented, sleep was approximated, and nothing stayed on around the clock. That gap is the thing the clip was bought to close.
Reading his own results, rather than having them handed to him, gave him the habit of arguing with his instruments. Last winter he ran a month with everything dialled in: hard fats minimised, hour long contrast sessions of ten minutes in the sauna and one or two in cold water for six rounds, and micro workouts at fifty five minutes of work to five of movement. His ring reported a vascular age four years younger, and he qualified the result before anyone could do it for him. That figure is calculated against other users of the same device, who are probably healthier than average, so the absolute number is doubtful. What he trusts is the direction, because his blood pressure fell over the same month, and if pressure falls while fitness holds, the vessels have become more elastic.
That is the quality of tracking that makes a good tester. He does not receive a number. He interrogates it, works out what it can and cannot support, and keeps the part that survives.

Ask him what he sees in a night and he does not describe a score. He describes shapes, and he has a working taxonomy of them. Waking, when it happens, arrives on a sleep cycle boundary: four hours, four and a half, or six.

Notice what the fourth shape is defined by. Not a spike and not a peak, but a floor that never arrives. The absence of the usual descent is the entire signal, which is a reconnaissance habit if ever there was one. What is missing tells you as much as what is there.
One to one
Most temperature research lives in the night. Asked what he would add, he went straight to the daytime and called it the main thing.
He knew this before the clip. It is why, when he wants to lift himself without a stimulant, he moves for a few minutes. The curve is falling, the alertness is falling, he moves, the temperature comes back up. What the clip added was the picture of it happening.
His day is built around it. He eats twice, and lunch is the first meal, deliberately large. The drowsiness afterwards does not bother him, because he plans for it: twenty to thirty minutes of sleep straight through the postprandial dip, then a short micro workout on waking to put the revs back into the engine.

The shape he engineers rather than the shape he receives. The dip is not a problem to be fixed, it is a window he sleeps through on purpose.
There are limits and he names them. A hard morning session buys a high peak and then a slump an hour or two later. Sitting down to static work after a night that was not abundant or good quality deepens the afternoon dive. He has always been, in his phrase, a daytime sleep person, and his rhythm is not flat across a day.
What the reporting is worth
If the clip largely confirms what he can already feel, the fair question is what he is getting from it. He answered that before we asked, back at the summit, and the answer has three parts. None of them is discovery.

The first panel is not hypothetical. In late summer he had the mildest possible cold, a little mucus in the throat and nothing he would have called an illness, and the trace showed he had spent the entire night above 37 °C. Not a fever he could feel. A body, as he put it, in a fighting state, sitting at the threshold. The previous winter, on the alpha device, a real fever took him past 38 °C and the clip was simply a thermometer he did not have to go and find.
The second is quieter and easier to undersell. The clip keeps collecting through the weeks when he is too busy to look, so when he does want to tune something, the history is already there and he is not starting from the day he remembered to care.
The third panel is the one he keeps returning to, and it is worth being straight about. He is not a customer who was shown something new. He is a customer whose own conclusions were independently corroborated, which for a man trained to distrust a single source is a different and possibly better thing.
What he wants next
Before anything on the feature list, he wanted to talk about how the app speaks to people. He raised it unprompted, and it is the same request three testers made independently in our Beta 2 interviews, which makes it the most consistent finding we have.
He wants two dials rather than one. Volume first: at least two and probably three sensitivity levels, because a punishing week and a quiet week need different things from the same application. On a busy week the unnecessary alerts simply irritate, and the few that matter get lost among them.
Tone second, and here he was careful to separate his own preference from the general case. He wants things stated directly, and attributes that to his background without any pride about it. Then he described the setting he thinks other people should be able to choose instead: a gentle companion that hints in a friendly way now and then, but does not push and does not force. Suggestive rather than imperative.
- A dehydration warning. He almost never feels thirsty, and when his routine breaks he slips into mild dehydration without noticing. He wonders whether body impedance and sweat could be combined into an early flag, then immediately supplies the objection himself: an hour in a sauna would produce enough sweat to trigger it falsely.
- A blood pressure trend. Not an absolute figure, which he doubts this sensor can give. A direction. He describes the mechanism precisely: rising pressure makes the pulse wave hit harder, a harder pulse wave stiffens the vessels faster, and stiffer vessels raise the pressure again. For someone in their thirties with acceptable readings and no habit of checking, catching that early is a public health intervention rather than a feature.
- A placement alert. If the sensor detects movement but not skin, the clip is being worn and is not reading. Those two facts together should produce a notification. He adds the constraint himself: not during the night, because nobody looks at a phone while asleep.
- The raw data back. The alpha app had a discovery view with every stream visible, sweat included. He knows he is not the average consumer and says so plainly, but when he is tuning one variable he would rather see it directly than through a score.
Report back
A patrol is not finished when the watching stops. It is finished when somebody writes it down and hands it to the people who need it. That is the step that turns observation into something anyone can act on, and it is the part nobody outside the trade thinks about.
Near the end of the conversation he mentioned, almost in passing, that he had not yet written his Beta 2 report. He had been keeping notes the whole time. He would start typing it the following day.
Nobody asked him for those notes. Nobody asked him to order his own blood tests before he had heard the word biohacking, or to run ten glucose monitors, or to argue with a vascular age reading until he had worked out precisely how much of it he was willing to believe. He does it because a reading nobody reports is not worth taking.
So his report has not reached us yet. Everything above is what he said across a table in three hours, before he had written a word of it down. The written version will be more thorough than the conversation was, and we will read every line of it.
